Lucets are a very ancient tool used for braiding cord. Documented back to 8th
century Vikings, as found in burials from this period. The tool could very well pre date this but no conclusive evidence for this has come forward. This tool finally started to lose favor during the industrial revolution when machines were able to recreate the movements of the lucet and started the demise of this ancient tool. It had one more period in the expansion of North America and Australia when machine bought cord was not always available or practical. Over the 14 hundred years this tool has been in use, about one hundred different
cords have been developed using this very simple looking tool. Most of our lucets come from re-claimed wood from all over the world in the form of
pallets and crates imported to the US, or when we come across downed trees, home remodeling or any other source when wood is being disposed of. These woods after use are bound for the dump until rescued by us to find a new life as one of our lucets, looms, boxes or other creations.

We build five different sizes in our two pronged lucets.

Mini, one of our newest came out of requests from our customers for a small lucet that would fit very easily in the palm of the hand and is only used on fine thread to light yarn. Measures:
handle-less, 1 1/2 in. across by just under 3 3/4 in. tall
handled, 1 1/2 in. across by 5 1/2 in. tall

Delicate, a good fit for small hands used for thread through heavy yarns, not
recommended for heavy cord as the horns on this particular lucet are lighter weight for more working room between the horns and not meant for the tension of pulling heavy cord.

handle-less, 2 1/8 in. across by 3 3/4 in. tall
handled, 2 1/8 in. across by 5 in. tall

Trimmer, this one is our work horse good for thread to heavy cord up to 1/2’ across it is comfortable in the hand but big enough to handle tent ropes it is about the same size as the delicate but the horns are about twice as thick. Measures:
handle-less, 2 1/4 in. across by 4 in. tall
handled, 2 1/4 in. across by 6 1/4 in. tall

Corder, for those with larger hands or those with no need in doing a lot of smaller thread work, this is a good choice as it has a lot of working room between the horns it is good for medium yarn through heavy cord, great for tent ropes, pull cords, belts or any of your bigger projects, not a good choice for those with delicate hands.

Roper, this one when first developed was meant for those teaching the use of the lucet and not for common use by the public, it is very large. To be used for
demonstrating with 1/4 in to 1 in. cord with ample room in between the horns to show the different steps and keep your hands clear, while remaining portable to be able to show close up to your students. The first show we had these at only one went to someone wanting to teach and the rest to parties that wanted to make period ropes for their pavilions.
